Maths at Springfields

We use the White Rose Education maths scheme to foster a deep, long-lasting understanding of mathematics for all our pupils.

What is White Rose Maths?

• Mastery Approach: Built on the belief that everyone can do maths, focusing on depth rather than rushing through concepts.
• Small Steps: Concepts are broken down into manageable, logical chunks so children build confidence gradually.
• CPA Approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract): Children explore new ideas using physical objects (concrete), pictures or diagrams (pictorial), and finally numbers and symbols (abstract).

How We Teach It

• Daily Fluency & Problem Solving: Lessons balance core arithmetic skills with rich reasoning and complex problem-solving tasks.
• Mathematical Talk: Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, use correct vocabulary, and prove their answers.
• Support and Challenge: Tasks are scaffolded for children who need extra support and extended with deeper challenges for rapid graspers.
